We believe that young people have a right to participate in decision making processes in their communities, districts, regions and at the national level; we believe prison inmates have rights and must be treated with respect and dignity; we believe that people with HIV/AID have same rights as everybody else, that they must have access to medication and medical attention. We believe that for young people to influence these issues, they must have training – which our youth development is all about; and training as education is a right!

Established in 2001, Advocacy Forum is a NGO committed to contest impunity and promote human rights and rule of law in Nepal. It seeks a fair, efficient and accessible justice system in Nepal. Advocacy Forum is engaged, through its five departments, in the following major activities:

The Afghan Independent Bar Association (AIBA) works to promote and protect the rule of law, social justice and implementation of Islamic instructions in Afghanistan. The AIBA believes in the right of Afghan citizens to have disputes heard and determined with the support of defense attorneys who are well-qualified, committed to the ethical practice of law, and able to practice independently regardless of any discrimination and without interference.

The AIBA was established to improve access to fair trials, to increase confidence in the legal profession among the public, to improve cooperation between stakeholders in the justice sector, to promote new generations of dedicated legal professionals and to fight against administrative corruption.

The Africa Democracy Forum (ADF), launched in Abuja, Nigeria, in October 2000, is an African regional network of democracy, human rights, and governance organizations. The ADF seeks to consolidate democracy in Africa by providing opportunities for democrats to openly express their views while also acting as a platform for mutual support and the sharing of resources. Over 400 organizations and individuals working on democracy issues in Africa currently participate in the ADF activities. The mandate of the ADF is to be an active advocate for democracy, the defense and promotion of human rights, good governance, and the rule of law.

The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) is an Indonesian-based organization with the goal of creating a free, professional and prosperous press that upholds the standards of democracy. Specifically, it aims to:

– Fight for the press freedom and the public rights to access information
– Improve the professionalism of journalists
– Develop democracy and diversity
– Fight for the welfare of press workers
– Engage in the efforts to eradicate corruption, injustice and poverty.

In 1998, AJI was officially admitted as an International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) member, the world’s largest and most influential journalists organization. AJI activists have also received several international awards from organizations such as the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), The Freedom Forum (AS), the International Press Institute (IPI-Vienna) and The Global Network of Editors and Media Executives (Zurich).

The Association of NGOs Against Trafficking in Persons in Central Asia (AATIPCA) is committed to the development, implementation, and monitoring of standards surrounding the unbiased treatment of victims of trafficking. It aspires to raise awareness around the growing problem of human trafficking and create an atmosphere of zero tolerance to trafficking in persons (TIP) and other violent crimes. The AATIPCA was founded in July 2008 by 3 NGOs in Kazakhstan. Currently, AATIPCA membership consists of 11 NGOs in Kazakhstan, 3 NGOs in Tajikistan, and 8 in Uzbekistan. However, this Association has worked in an informal alliance since 2001. The network participated in IOM’s anti-TIP projects funded by USAID, SIDA and USDS’s BPRM in 2001-2007. The NGOs also received grants directly from OSCE, US Embassy, BPRM, HIVOS, and other donors. Since 2001 to date, the NGOs have gathered practical experience in direct assistance to victims of trafficking and other violent crimes (sexual assaults, kidnapping, etc.) including accommodation of victims at temporary and permanent shelters and providing psychological consultancy and rehabilitation services to them. The NGOs have also have skills training in advocacy and awareness-raising campaigns, training for risk groups and assistance/protection providers, and hotline consultancies.

The Bangladesh Institute of Human Rights (BIHR), created in 1992, is a non-governmental organization working to create awareness amomg sectoral groups for the protection, promotion of human rights and to ensure respect for and realization of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the fundamental provisions of the Constitution of Bangladesh.

Be In Vision Pakistan represents nearly 30 million people and workers around the globe targeting almost every social and economis Cause. Their 401 member organizations operate in 172 countries and territories, from areas of work such as education to the judiciary. As the largest Global Union Federation, and the only one representing media workers in every corner of the globe, Be In Vision Pakistan unites all humanitarian workers no matter where they are.

Be In Vision Pakistan was visualized in 2006 to serve the non-profit sectors both nationally and internationally, while working in Pakistan along with their Pakistani partners. It exists through a partnership between NGOs working in Pakistan and various private sector professionals who are devoted to working towards a better world. Originally, Be In Vision Pakistan grew out of a loose network of professionals working in Pakistan ranging from the legal to IT sector. In the early 2007, they started to meet on a regular basis in order to discuss the practical details of establishing and managing programmes and projects in Pakistan. NGOs have focused increasingly on sharing information on their programmes, and working together to improve the quality of their work and to ensure the effective execution of social-sector projects.

PRI has been working in the Central Asia region since 2001. It currently manages programmes in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and maintains contact with partners in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. PRI’s Central Asia programme is focused on reducing the prison population, improving prison management through the promotion of human rights standards, increasing the transparency of criminal justice systems, improving prisoners’ health and abolishing the death penalty. Programme activities centre on building the capacity of local NGOs to contribute to penal reform efforts and supporting and promoting good practice. PRI also works directly with government departments and prison administrations to assist in legislating and implementing criminal justice reforms.

Civil Liberties Committee, CILIC, CILIC Is a Malawian Human Rights Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) that protects, monitors, promotes Human Rights and Social Justice through: Civic Education; Counselling victims of human rights abuse, many of them being women and children; Conducting debates through focus group discussions; Litigation; Lobbying; Advocacy; and Research. CILIC is amongst the first human rights organisation to be established in Malawi. It started as an underground movement by a group of disgruntled lawyers that was fed up with the oppressive one party rule. It registered as a non gorvernmental organisation in 1993.

CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is an international alliance of members and partners which constitute an influential network of organisations at the local, national, regional and international levels, and span the spectrum of civil society including: civil society networks and organisations; trade unions; faith-based networks; professional associations; NGO capacity development organisations; philanthropic foundations and other funding bodies; businesses; and social responsibility programmes. CIVICUS has worked for over a decade to strengthen citizen action and civil society throughout the world, especially in areas where participatory democracy and citizens’ freedom of association are threatened. CIVICUS has a vision of a global community of active, engaged citizens committed to the creation of a more just and equitable world. This is premised on the belief that the health of societies exists in direct proportion to the degree of balance between the state, the private sector and civil society. CIVICUS provides a focal point for knowledge-sharing, common interest representation, global institution-building and engagement among these disparate sectors. It acts as an advocate for citizen participation as an essential component of governance and democracy worldwide. One of the first law schools established in the United States, Columbia Law School is internationally renowned as a leading center of legal scholarship with a deep commitment to teaching and professional training. The Juris Doctor (J.D.) program is offered only on a full-time basis, requiring three years of study. The academic year, comprising two semesters, extends from mid-August through mid-May. The Committee for Social Justice (CSJ) is an initiative of the families of disappeared citizens, activists and human rights defenders established to investigate, document and advocate for justice and human rights in Nepal including the discovery of the whereabouts of the citizens that were disappeared during the People’s War in Nepal (1996-2006). CSJ advocates for the right to a truth and reconciliation process: for truth, justice, reparation and peace. CSJ was initiated by Ram Kumar Bhandari in 2007 after he noticed the psychological trauma that has and continues to plague many families in his home district of Lamjung. Ram’s father disappeared in 2001, making him acutely aware of the difficult and frustrating situation that many families face on a daily basis. Today, CSJ is known and recognized across Nepal as an active campaign group, bringing families together to advocate for justice and human rights.=

On the Thai-Burma border, the Human Rights Education Institute of Burma (HREIB) brings together diverse organizations documenting human rights violations in Burma. HREIB aims to create an accurate historical record of abuses committed under military rule. Through workshops, seminars, and field visits, Truth Project partners improve their documentation skills and engage in joint advocacy campaigns while also preparing for future transitional justice mechanisms, such as a truth commission and/or community-based historical memory projects.

The “Human Rights in the XXI century – Azerbaijan” Foundation was created in June 2004. The main objectives of this organization are to support and promote human rights and restore violated rights. In addition, it also focuses on improving the standard of quality in the Azerbaijan legal system. Its activities include, among others, circulating a monthly newspaper, preparing and disseminating literature on human rights, and conducting roundtable discussions with experts and specialists of their respective fields.

The Humanitarian Legal Assistance Foundation is an NGO based in the Philippines that was established in response to the worsening phenomenon of inhumane and unjust detention. The Foundation seeks alleviate this problem, especially with regards to women and children, through direct legal action, intervention and policy advocacy. It aims to secure the immediate release of persons from prison, specially children and women detained for victimless offenses, those imprisoned for a period equal to or longer than the penalty imposable for the offense with which they are charged, wrongfully accused and jailed persons, and those suffering from any form of inhumane and unjust detention. The Foundation releases annual reports that document the efforts of its three main platforms—the Legal Assistance Program, Empowerment Program and Advocacy Program.

More than 600,000 people of Latin American and Caribbean origins live in the Washington DC Metro Area. Many have left the more impoverished sections of their nations; most are from countries where the District of Columbia-based Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is actively working to improve economic and social conditions. In response to the steady growth of these immigrant populations, the Bank created the IDB-DC Solidarity Program in 1998.

The IDB-DC Solidarity Program builds partnerships with local community-based organizations to promote development initiatives for Hispanic and Caribbean communities in the District of Columbia by providing grants, volunteers, and equipment donations in the areas of education, health, and economic development. KARAPATAN, founded in 1995, is an alliance of individuals, groups and organizations working for the promotion and protection of human rights in the Philippines. Its founders and members have been at the forefront of the human rights struggle in the Philippines since the time of Marcos’ martial law regime. Its members dedicate their efforts to the defense of people’s rights and civil liberties through activites such as education and training, campaign and advocacy work, and service programs.

The Kyrgyz Committee for Human Rights (KCHR) was established by Dyryldaev Ramazan, a well known human rights defender throughout Kyrgyzstan and the world. The Kyrgyz Committee for Human Rights is one of the biggest NGOs in Kyrgyzstan, uniting more than 1000 activists in Kyrgyzstan and abroad. The KCHR has a broad base of human rights initiatives, including programs fighting torture and corruption, as well as campaigns advocating for children’s and women’s rights. In addition, the KCHR writes annual reports and coordinates their efforts with an array of international organizations, including, but not limited to, the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the United Nations.

Legal Rights Forum is a plat form of young Advocates, voluntarily working all over Pakistan. Legal Rights Forum provides comprehensive care to the public at large. We provide the legal assistance to the male, female and juvenile prisoners who are incarcerated to prison we attempt to teach them ways that helps them to make healthy choices which not only helps them to love them selves but also others. Our forum is committed to enforce legal /fundamental rights as mentioned in the Constitution of Pakistan 1973, and fundamental principles of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Legal Rights Forum has also held awareness programs in respect of the rights of prisoners provided them under the Constitution of Pakistan, 1973 and various local laws of land.

Born from the idea that all members of society have the potential to actively participate in forging a just and democratic nation, a group of human rights lawyers, scholars and democrats in Indonesia established a non- profit civil society organization named the Community Legal Aid Institute (LBH Masyarakat). LBH Masyarakat aims for a future where everyone in society has access to legal assistance through participating in and defending probono legal aid, upholding justice and fulfilling human rights. MINBYUN—Lawyers for a Democratic Society—was established in 1988 in response to human rights violations in South Korea. The organization contributes to the development of democracy in South Korea through litigation, research, and investigation, and by increasing public awareness and collaborating on activities to protect basic human rights and attain social justice In addition, MINBYUN provides legal advice and cooperation to non-governmental organizations working for social progress.

MOPGEL was fashioned in Liberia the year 2000, to join other civil society movements around the world to break the conspiracy of silence surrounding discrimination and violence against women, youth and children. MOPGEL was formed working from the premise that cultural and traditional practices denied girls, women and others access to vocational training and education, hence restricting their ability to improve livelihoods, literacy and to make a better quality of life for themselves and their families. Along these lines, program that emphasize human rights, vocational training, education, health care and the development of human resources are imperative and this is where this organization aims to provide support and services. MOPGEL exists to minimize gender inequalities and injustice in society through Advocacy, Awareness, Research, Education, Economic Empowerment and the Environment.

Mubashir Bhutta Human Rights (MBHR) was established in January, 2000 and registered in February 2003 under the Deed of Trust. Its focus is to promote human rights in Pakistan, as it believes that justice and rights should exist for everyone. The activities and goals of the MBHR are as follows:

The Pakistan Lawyers Foundation (PLF) is a non-profit organization working to ensure the provision of quality legal service for all in Pakistan. The PLF strives to raise the standard of legal service through the following activitiies:

PINE TREE is a non-profit group in La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines whose mission is to promote the intellectual, cultural and environmental rights of indigenous peoples. It develops local solutions for global environmental problems and, through research, education and trainings, it implements sustainable conservation and safe livelihood practices.

PREDA is a human rights and social development NGO working in the Philippines for the last 34 years, striving to help the poorest and most vulnerable people in society to overcome injustice and poverty. PREDA’s mission focuses on a multitude of critical issues in Filipino society, such as winning freedom and new life for children in jails, brothels, and on the street. Other areas of focus involve domestic violence victims, protecting indigenous people and the environment, and alleviating poverty through micro-credit and fair trade practices.There are 88 professional Filipino staff implementing the 12 projects of PREDA.

The Public Interest Law Institute (PILI) is an international NGO that advances human rights around the world by stimulating public interest advocacy and developing the institutions necessary to sustain it. Public interest law encompasses activities such as campaigning, strategic litigation, legal aid, clinical legal education, legal literacy and other public education programs. PILI’s approach is to develop and support the diverse array of organizations, programs and individuals involved in these activities and united by a common sense of mission: strengthening the use of law as an instrument for achieving social justice. In doing so, public interest law activities apply principles of human rights, democracy, open society and the rule of law.

The Qadir Foundation is a non-profit organization that facilitates community development projects throughout Pakistan. Its vision is to promote the ideology of Pakistan; to build national character in the light of the teachings of Islam; to serve the community by providing educational, social, moral, health & advocacy services; and to create awareness about women’s rights. It has undertaken a large variety of activities covering adult literacy through non-formal education, special education (for the physically challenged), computer training, vocational training for women, health care and micro credit.

SMU’s undergraduate law program aims to mold students into excellent lawyers who will contribute significantly to society. Founded in 2007, the South East Asia Media Legal Defense Network is the first regional network of lawyers dedicated to the defense of a free media in South East Asia and the training of legal professionals for that purpose.The South East Asia Media Legal Defense Network consists of lawyers and media advocates from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Supreme Court of Mongolia is the highest judicial organ of the State and the court of last resort. The primary goal of the judiciary is to protect the rights, freedoms and lawful interests of individuals and to develop a law-governed state. The Supreme Court is comprised of a Chief Justice and 16 Justices, and its jurisdiction is exercised by three Chambers: Criminal, Civil and Administrative Chambers. The main duty of each is to adjudicate cases under their jurisdiction and provide professional guidance to judges.

The Institute of Religion, Culture and Peace (formerly The Institute for the Study of Religion and Culture) was established by Payap University in 1996. The Institute’s primary mission is to (1) foster increased mutual appreciation and cooperation among the world’s different religious communities and to contribute to greater interreligious and intrareligious understanding among all people everywhere, and (2) to contribute to peacebuidling and reconciliation efforts in Thailand and throughout the world.

Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET) is a non-governmental organisation initiated in May 2000 by several women’s organisations in Uganda to develop the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) among women as tools to share information and address issues collectively.

WOUGNET’s mission is to promote and support the use of ICTs by women and women organisations in Uganda, so that they can take advantage of the opportunities presented by ICTs in order to effectively address national and local problems of sustainable development. The new ICTs, in particular, email and the Internet facilitate communication with each other and the international community. Indeed, access to information about best practices, appropriate technologies, ideas and problems of other groups working on similar concerns have been identified as critical information and communication needs of women organisations in Africa.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum has been in existence since January 1998 when non-governmental organisations working in the field of human rights joined together to provide legal and psychological assistance to the victims of the Food Riots of January 1998. The Forum consists of 16 Zimbabwean human rights organisations.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum operates a Research and Documentation Unit and offers legal services through the Public Interest Unit of the Legal Resources Foundation from the headquarters in Harare, in addition to the information service that is offered internationally from the International Liaison Office.
